Breast reduction (also known as reduction mammaplasty) is a highly successful plastic surgery procedure performed regularly by Dr Lim and Dr Somia. A Breast Reduction produces pleasing cosmetic results, whilst being a recommended solution to the physical problems that large, heavy breasts can cause women. Women with very large breasts commonly suffer from poor posture, resulting in neck and back pain. This can limit their physical activity levels and may even cause psychological discomfort and embarrassment.
In addition, severe skin irritation may occur as infections or rashes develop in the folds underneath the breasts or the indentations from bra straps. The breast reduction procedure may be used to match reconstructed breasts following mastectomy. In the hands of an experienced plastic surgeon such as Dr Lim or Dr Somia, impressive surgical results in the reduction of your breast size are achieved with resolution to problems virtually overnight. Dr Lim and Dr Somia will talk with you about the benefits you are likely to experience with breast reduction surgery and will also speak with you about your desired outcome.
Breast reduction surgery involves the removal of excess skin, fatty and breast tissue, restoring the balance between your breast size and your body. Following the removal of the breast tissue, the nipples and areolas are then repositioned so that they suit the new size and shape of the breasts. The breast reduction surgical procedure can be performed at any age after breast development has completed. However, repositioning of the nipples may result in the inability to breastfeed – this point should be taken into account by women who plan to have children. As weight loss will affect the size and also the shape of the breasts, you would also be advised to maintain your weight at a stable level prior to your procedure. During your breast reduction consultation Dr Lim/Dr Somia will discuss in detail your desired breast size and shape as well as the outcome after having this procedure.
Please note that it is extremely difficult to accurately predict the future effects of weight loss, pregnancy and ageing on your breast size and shape. Your breasts will continue to be affected by these factors and others following your procedure.
Breast Reduction: The Incision
The breast reduction procedure allows for various approaches regarding the placement of the incisions. The placement and the number of incisions will depend on your breast size and shape and also on the amount of skin and other tissue that requires removal in order to achieve the desired results.
The most common incision is made around the areola, while another from the lower part of the areola vertically down the breast (known as the lollipop incision) and possibly another incision that travels along the breast crease (known as the anchor-shaped incision).
Dr Lim and Dr Somia will discuss the breast reduction procedure in detail with you and talk about the surgical approach that is most suitable for you. You can discuss your concerns with them regarding any queries you have about the breast reduction procedure. Great care is taken with incision placement to ensure scarring is as inconspicuous as possible, even with low-cut clothes.
